Today, as our country and other nations worldwide focus attention on the tragic events of September 11, 2001, I felt it was important to honor the memory of all affected by an act of positive creation.

Reprinted here in my blog for the first time is “The House That Love Built: as lives and buildings crumble, love and hope endure” written 10 years ago following the death of my father, and immediately afterward, the events of 9/11.

I hope that everyone who reads this will choose one positive goal today to work toward, and take the first step on that path of creation. Let’s counter negative events and energy with positive change.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”—Margaret Mead

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Never in my life have I experienced so much loss in such a short period of time. In the past three months I have seen the death of my relationship with the man I thought I would spend the rest of my life with—the man that I sold my home in Massachusetts and packed up all my animals to be with; the death of my father after a year-long battle with cancer; and now with the recent tragic events surrounding the terrorist hijacking of four jet airplanes, the possible death of freedom and hope for a balanced existence on this planet.

A month ago my search for a place to live that would accept myself, five cats and a large dog was interrupted by the chilling news that my father had two days to two weeks to live. I made my arrangements and flew back to the East Coast to be with my sisters and my father. There I did my best to run a mobile graphic design office, and cope with the nightmare of assisting with hospice care for my father. I say nightmare, because nothing could have prepared me for watching my father, a formerly very active man, make a rapid descent into a complete invalid. He did not share his feelings with us, but I am certain it was as difficult for him as it was for us. We were all gathered around him, holding space and energy as he struggled valiantly to die with dignity. As he drew his last breath he was looking straight into my eyes and I can tell you that one of the most difficult tasks I have ever undertaken was to hold fast to my intent to be balanced, grounded and centered in the face of the death of my own father. To do any less would not have been to his benefit, but it took everything I knew and every ounce of determination I could muster to do it.

Prior to his passing I had struggled with the fact that my father did not share his feelings about death or about how he felt about us in his last weeks of life. In retrospect I believe that he had to turn inward in order to prepare himself, but I struggled at the time with why he was not opening his heart to us. After he died my sisters and I had the task of writing separate eulogies for his memorial service. I opened my healing mesa and began to search for the truth behind the appearance. I would like to share what I finally wrote.

“Dad was a man of few words, unlike his daughters. As his illness progressed I had an opportunity to reflect on how little I really knew about him since he seldom spoke about how he felt. Our conversations were usually about day-to-day matters, rather than heart-to-heart.

“One day, while taking a break from caregiving, I stepped outside onto the deck for a breath of fresh air, and dissolved into tears at the thought that my father would be leaving without my ever having truly known him.

The Playhouse 35 years later

“Through my tears I suddenly noticed the playhouse that my father had built for us when we were children. Originally it had been a wooden slide that ended in a sandbox that cushioned our landings. When we got too big for it Dad rebuilt it into a magical space, with seats that folded up into the walls when we finished with them, a table that folded down with separate front legs you attached for greater support, windows that opened and closed, with screens to let the breeze in and clear plastic panes to keep the weather out. All fashioned with great care, and still standing after almost 35 years. I marveled at the craftsmanship and attention to detail and wondered about the man who had built this for his children.

“And then it struck me, images of my father’s hands through the years, hands that shaped much of the house we grew up in: the mahogany cabinets, sideboards, and built-ins in every room of the house, most of the woodwork on the patio, every pachysandra-filled flowerbed on the property—everywhere I looked bore eloquently expressed testament to my father’s love, care, practicality, imagination and attention to detail.

“I recalled stories that close friends of Dad’s had shared with me in past weeks, all speaking of his compassionate care for others. One woman told me of the time when she was pregnant and her husband was out of town and she awoke one night with a painful tooth abcess and called Dad. He drove across several towns and picked her up, brought her to the office, drained the abcess and drove her back home again. Others spoke of fillings that had lasted them 40-50 years, far exceeding the average lifespan of dental work, and of Dad’s devotion to painless dentistry.

“Dad was a man of few words, but I realized in a moment of awareness that all these years he has spoken to us all through his hands—hands that have touched the lives of many. Those same hands that fashioned delicate and strong dental work for his patients also built a magical playhouse for his children.”

I flew back to Seattle on Sunday afternoon, September 9, and arrived with the sure knowledge that my life had changed irrevocably with the death of my father, and that it would continue to change as I still faced the dissolution of my current living situation and partnership and the difficult task of finding a place to live. And then on Tuesday morning, September 11, the lives of the world changed as the news of terrorist attacks filled the media and disrupted all our lives.

My first response was sheer inability to take it all in. My second was to seek to find how I could help, perhaps sending energy in some fashion. But my third response was the hardest to deal with. I became angrier and angrier. I could feel a desire building to seek out and destroy those that had visited this terrible destruction on innocent beings. I struggled with my desire to lash out at them, and in my line of work intent governs all, energy can be used for positive or negative effect. I brought to mind all of my teachers and all I had learned searching for what I should do. Should I give in to the overwhelming urge to destroy, exercising power ultimately for self-gratification, or should I seek to find compassion and understanding to facilitate healing and sponsor balance, as espoused by the Tibetan lama and others I have encountered? The classic struggle waged its war inside me, and ultimately the desire for healing rather than destruction won.

The struggle took its toll, that afternoon I became very ill as all of the stressful events finally caught up with my physical body. As a result I have been an observer rather than a participant in all of the events that have followed this past week. Many people have been active in sending energy or prayers for healing of the earth, and many politicians have been equally busy shaping policy and response. The general populace has been mourning, seemingly with sentiment divided in the same struggle I underwent.

I have no great wisdom to impart as to how the situation should be handled, but my illness forced me into a position where I could DO NOTHING, I could only BE. Within that stillness I could taste the wrongness of the some of the energy currents that circulated, and I realized that the entire world had been affected and thrown off balance, not just our country. Further I could see that some of the energy lines encircling the earth were massively tangled, as though a kitten had snarled a ball of yarn.

My enforced stillness left me in the position of only being able to observe the natural world around me. In contrast to the devastation I saw on television, life continued; birds flew and sang, insects swirled in the sunlight, squirrels ran races up and down the trees. It was forcibly driven home that humans are not the only life on this planet, yet we hold an inordinate amount of power over the lives of other beings. It was that urge for power, the desire to forcibly manipulate the lives of others that motivated the terrorists. Should it be our intent to follow their lead and meet force with force? Or can we set a different intent, one that can prevent future violence while maintaining compassion, understanding, care and balance, and promoting healing of ourselves and others?

I ask that each of us search for the meaning beneath the seeming, so that we may experience gratitude for what we do have, rather than anger for what we don’t. Be aware both of self and others. Form a clear intent that helps promote growth rather than destruction. Hold the intent that like the aftermath of a volcanic eruption new life and hope can arise from the ashes of destruction. Like my father’s hands spoke to me, it is our actions that will speak most eloquently to the generations that follow. It is my prayer for all of us that we find the wisdom, love and compassion needed to heal and preserve all life on this planet.

“The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than blacks were made for whites, or women for men.” — Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple

My interview Animal Reiki Shamanism – Rose De Dan, Seattle with Lilou Macé of Lilou’s Juicy Living Tour was released today. In the video we talk about animals and spirit guides – the messages they wish to share with us – and how together we can co-create a sustainable vision for the future of our world.

Topics covered included Reiki, shamanism, domestic, wild and zoo animals, and I tell lots of stories about my adventures, visions, ceremonies and messages from the animals and from Spirit. And my own animal companions – Kiya, Puma, Bagheera, Cougar and Sand – make cameo appearances (as usual, Kiya got the starring role, appearing at the beginning of the video and she even upstaged me by appropriating my name).

Lilou is in the fifth month of a year-long tour, interviewing inspirational people across the U.S. ‎Meeting with her was an amazing opportunity that came about through the serendipity of student Rhonda Hanley’s suggesting me as a candidate.

During our time together I found her to be warm and supportive, and Lilou’s own journey resulted in the creation of the Juicy Living Tour as chronicled in her book I Lost My Job and I Liked It: 30 Day Law of Attraction Diary of a Dream Job Seeker. And next year she plans to tour Europe, talk about living the Law of Attraction! Her travels are fueled by donations by Web TV viewers who enjoy a wealth of wisdom and stories contained in over 1500 interviews, and I feel truly honored to be included.

I wish Lilou all the best – her work is helping so many people – and speaking with her gave a boost to my own dreams of rebuilding the bridge between people and animals. It is my hope that viewers find the interview as exciting as the experiences/adventures were for me.

One person left this comment about the interview on YouTube, “That was a long one, but so worth the time. I really appreciated every word of it & Rose has opened my mind a little to maybe starting to see SOME zoos and SOME pelts in a new way. That’s a big paradigm shift for me, but there’s a crack now in that armor & a tiny bit of light coming through.”—MajorArcanaTV

Today’s quote is from Tails of a Healer: Animals, Reiki and Shamanism:

“We share this world, Pachamama (a Peruvian Quechua word meaning Mother Earth), with species seemingly vastly different than ourselves. Many of us feel a loss of connection, a distancing from the natural world that surrounds and maintains precarious toeholds within our cultivated, civilized areas.

“And so we bring the natural world into our homes—plants, fountains, other species (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, fish)—to share our space with us. And we do this because it makes us feel good, perhaps not consciously realizing that what we seek is a return to balance, harmony, and connection with all our relations.” — Rose De Dan, Wild Reiki and Shamanic Healing

When I first published my book, Tails of a Healer: Animals, Reiki and Shamanism, I wrote a humorous article entitled Inviting a Tiger Home to Play: Unleashing a Shamanic Book which contained stories that clearly showed that the book had a mind, and a spirit, all its own. Several of those stories revolved around dogs and cats who seemed to find the book’s energy irresistible.

And now I have another such story to share thanks to reader Donna Safley of Zion, Illinois who kindly took the time to write to me and share her enjoyment of my book.

“All of my family have said that I have a bond with both wild and domestic animals. My niece has turned my love for animals towards obtaining second degree Reiki. She sent me your book and I am devouring it. You practice such warmth, understanding and compassion towards animals that I have cried at the energy that you use so lovingly. I must tell you that your energy comes through the book. My 18 year old cat, Mort, has taken to resting on it.”

Donna also shared that Mort, her dog and her niece’s dog are “Reiki sponges,” but that Mort seemed to be a notch above in his love for Reiki.

Eighteen years ago, as a kitten, Mort grabbed her husband David’s pant leg, and they ended up bringing him home where another cat, Kiki, adopted him. However, Mort never truly became a demonstrative cat to others, mostly just to Donna.

When Donna took Reiki training, Mort discovered a new love. Donna’s Reiki Master, Helen, sent papers home with her to study and Mort took to sitting on them and “hatching” them. Now, when Donna even thinks of doing Reiki on any of the other animals, Mort mysteriously shows up to join in, absorbing the energy from the sidelines. And apparently Mort has also taken quite a liking to my book, Tails of a Healer.

Donna said, “Whenever I read a book, Mort climbs on the bed and noses it. However, with your book, he rubs his scent on the book. If I put the book on the bed, he is on top of it. When I put it on the nightstand and go to turn out the light, I get the oddest look from him. It is as if he is saying, ‘Hey, what do you think you are doing?’”

I was so tickled by Mort and Donna’s story that I asked if I could write this article. When I requested a photo of Mort from Donna to go along with it I expected to receive a picture of just Mort, however Donna surprised me by setting up a photo shoot of Mort with my book.

Donna told me, “I just came from the bedroom. I put a cover on the bedspread and put out your book. Well, guess who was rubbing the book? I used my cell phone and captured a couple of shots of him with his book. Honestly, you must have some energy!

“As I write, he is in there with the book. How do you explain this to others that do not experience what Reiki does? Maybe it is like having the sunshine hit your face on the first gentle spring day after a long, cold winter?

“Just to let you know, I did an experiment with Mort. I had another book in the room. You know that cats love to ‘read’ what you are reading. So, I put both books out. Mort sniffed both and then went back to yours.

“Your interest is so appreciated. I am proud of the lessons that my father and late husband taught me about the creatures in life that touch us. Reiki has added to these lessons and enhanced my relationships.

“Thank you for thinking that my Mort is special. He is, just like all creatures.”

Donna and Mort, I could not agree more. My thanks to both of you for sharing your love for each other, for Reiki, and for my book. When I wrote its’ stories one by one, I never dreamt that eventually they would touch so many lives in so many different ways. And how many authors can say that they have cat fans?

After many months of hard work, I am thrilled to be able to announce the arrival of a new shamanic calendar inspired by the need of so many people and animals for healing, both personal and global. Here is the official announcement!

Are you feeling rushed, tired and drained?
Our world seems to be moving faster and faster, causing us to feel depleted and off balance. There seems to be little time for us to replenish and renew our life force. In addition the news about global warming and its impact on us, the Earth, and all its inhabitants seems overwhelming.

New and Unique Shamanic Calendar/Workbook Helps Restore Balance and Promote Healing for Self and the Earth

Rose De Dan and Carolyn Riley are proud to announce that the new Wild Reiki and Shamanic Healing 2009 Calendar has just been released. Entitled Tails of a Healer: Animals, Reiki and Shamanism Calendar and Workbook, each month contains energetic and insightful photographs paired with carefully chosen accompanying quotes. Photographs and quotes are by writer, artist, shaman and Reiki Master Rose De Dan, some never before published.

Printed in oversize 11 x 17 format, this calendar is more than just a beautiful and articulate face. Accompanying the photos and stories are 12 powerful shamanic ceremonies and meditations, custom crafted by Rose De Dan and shaman, Reiki Master and self-improvement coach Carolyn Riley, that can assist you in gaining deeper connection with your animal companions, the natural world, and with yourself.

These heart-centered exercises are shared with you from their collective 25 years of training and experience in the Peruvian shamanic tradition, and can be just what you are seeking to help restore your sense of connection and well-being. Carolyn and Rose have carefully designed the ceremonies and meditations so that they can be done by anyone—no prior training or experience in energy work is needed.

Rose De Dan and her dog, PumaMy fledgling video effort, “Two Dogs, a story of compassion and animal communication” is up on YouTube!

“Two Dogs” is the true story of two lost dogs, and this video lovingly portrays the miracles that can happen when you communicate from your heart, and features my reading an excerpt from my new book, “Tails of a Healer: Animal, Reiki and Shamanism,” to my dog, Puma. Two of my cats, Kiya and Saqqara, also make cameo appearances.

The making of “Two Dogs,” produced and directed by Reiki Master Rhonda Hanley, was inspired by the Seeds of Compassion press conference video that His Holiness the Dalai Lama made prior to his recent visit to Seattle, Wash.

My intention was to see if I could get the video widely distributed, perhaps raising consciousness about compassion and communication from the heart, especially among children, our hope for the future of this world.

You can help spread the word by passing the link to the video on to others, and by rating the video with stars and leaving your comments, it helps to increase traffic and viewership.

Enjoy, and thanks from all of us!

Well, I have survived my first book reading, and I am happy to report, I actually had fun!

When I arrived at SoulFood Books in Redmond, and toted in my shamanic gear, I got my first look at where I would be reading, and seriously questioned if I knew what I was doing. For some reason I had imagined that I would be ensconced in an armchair somewhere among the bookshelves (perhaps I had delusions of being Alistair Cook on PBS). Instead I was led over to the café area and a STAGE, complete with a chair, spotlights, and a microphone on a stand. More the kind of setup I would expect for a musician, rather than an author, and indeed there was a guitar case lurking nearby.

So riveted was I by the idea of having to appear on that stage that I completely overlooked the overhead sign announcing “Rose De Dan, Author.” If I had not been so deer-in-the-headlights I might have taken a moment to appreciate the first-time joy of seeing my name, if not in lights, at least paired on a chalkboard with the lovely title “author” for all to see. Instead I can thank Rhonda Hanley, who documented the evening photographically, for the opportunity to at least savor it in private later.
my name in chalk

While setting up and greeting some familiar faces kind enough to support me on this maiden venture as an author, I recalled a long-ago experience as a child, my first and last voluntary venture onto the stage as a performer.

My best friend at the time thought it would be a great idea for us to participate in the church play. Never shy, Lisa painted a rosy picture of the fun we would have. The reality of it was entirely different for me, merely setting foot on stage, even for rehearsals, raised my normally shy nature into the realm of the panic-stricken, rendering me completely wooden as an actress.

I do not recall the name of the play, but I do recall my part, a little old lady who knitted and was blind as a bat. My stage fright was so bad that they put scotch tape over the prop glasses that I wore in order to take away most of my ability to see the audience. It also made it more believable when I stumbled into things, as my character was supposed to do. I can clearly recall understanding at the time that my character was important to the play in her physical comic relief, and knowing that I was unable to loosen up enough to deliver, never mind being able to say my lines in any relaxed or funny fashion.

The night of the play’s actual performance passed in a blur, my lines (mercifully few) were inaudible and no one laughed at the parts of my performance that should have been funny as I am certain everyone could see me shaking with sheer nerves. It was a wonder at the time to me that I did not actually throw up. I felt very clearly that a career as an actress was not my path, and promised myself to never attempt something like that again.

It was ironic to me in those moments setting up that—despite having engaged in one of the world’s most solitary pastimes, writing—I now found myself on stage—and on stage, alone. It was a one-woman show, or was it?

Didn’t I now have years of Reiki and shamanic training and teaching under my belt? Hadn’t I done major personal healing work, and wasn’t I a different person now than that poor, terrified child who had wanted to have some fun on stage? And wasn’t my mesa with me, all those many stone friends connected to places of power such as oceans, earth, mountains, rivers, and so on? And wasn’t She Walks there, spirit guide who takes up residence in a bobcat pelt when visibility is needed? I was not alone on stage—I had the entire Peruvian and Reiki lineage standing with and behind me. As a matter of fact, now the stage seemed smaller than before—would there be enough room for all of us?

Suddenly it was time to start, and as I sat down in the chair and faced the audience fully, for the first time, I felt my sense of humor bubble up, and I could not resist smiling at them, and sharing, “I feel like I should have a guitar in my hand.” They all laughed, breaking the ice, and I took my first tentative steps into the world of book and shamanic performance art.

I had chosen five pieces from “Tails of a Healer: Animals, Reiki and Shamanism” to read, and began with “Two Dogs,” a relatively simple story, but powerful in its message that if we focus on our hearts we can communicate with other species.

The audience seemed attentive, so heartened I launched into “As the Stomach Churns,” and while I read I made a conscious decision to lighten up and let that small child finally have her fun on stage. The piece, if told well, is humorous, and I began to focus on the funny parts, playing with timing and delivery, and lo and behold, they laughed, in all the right places! I could feel that inner child smile.

I followed with “The House That Love Built,” the story of the death of my father and the events of 9-11 that followed directly afterward. I had never read this piece out loud before, and as I suddenly found myself connecting emotionally with a part in the story regarding my father, you could clearly hear the tears in my voice. I could feel the audience respond sympathetically, and I thought frantically, “I can’t cry onstage!” I took a deep breath and there was a significant pause as I grounded and rebalanced myself, and then, bless the universe and the spirits, into that emotional pause burst the outrageously loud sound of the expresso machine being turned on. The timing was so perfectly absurd that everyone laughed, including me, the tension broke, and I was able to continue without incident.

It was with the fourth piece, “Guns and Mesas” that I had originally determined to include something that I suppose I can call shamanic performance art. The first part of the story involves my detainment at the airport while returning East, four months after my father’s death, for my youngest sister Claudine’s wedding. As I read the part in the story where my shamanic items are lifted from my travel bag to be inspected by airport security, I physically brought same items forth on stage: first, She Walks’ pelt, then my mesa, and finally my Florida Water.

Now for the climactic part, the shamanic wedding blessing I gave at my sister’s wedding. With a swirl I donned my shamanic cloak and gave the actual blessing, all while juggling microphone, bottle of Florida Water, and gourd rattle. That was actually the hardest part, to remember to shake the rattle, and not the microphone, all while speaking, and blowing sprays of Florida Water. I can honestly say it was a challenge, but it seemed to come off fairly well.shamanic blessing

I concluded with a relatively sedate piece, “At the Edge of Two Worlds,” which paints a picture of the beauty of the Alki shore and the awe I felt in my encounter with two seal pups I met there, and then opened the floor to questions.

The audience was very supportive and curious, and thanks to insightful questions from people that knew me, some of whom were also mesa carriers, I think that the rest of the audience learned a few things about the nature of shamanism and its relationship to the natural and spirit world. By this time I was feeling a lot more comfortable, and why not, wasn’t all of my shamanic gear spread around me? With my mesa open the spirit world was having a party on stage, it was getting quite lively.

Then, for me, the best part of the evening happened. As I was packing up, a woman who had asked me questions about a stone that she had found that insisted on coming home with her, approached and asked if she could touch She Walks. I told her I had to ask permission, and when I did She Walks said, “Hand me to her.” As the woman took her she cradled She Walks in her arms, holding her lovingly, and began stroking her soft fur. Then she looked up at me, eyes wide, but shining with the light of discovery, and exclaimed, “It’s like she’s alive! It’s like she’s breathing!” And I smiled back at her with answering joy and delight, for I well remembered my first connection with the being I call She Walks and how that changed my life. So taken was the woman with the energy that I had to gently extract She Walks in order to finish packing.

So, I feel that my first book reading was a great success. I literally brought who I was to the stage, both personally and professionally, and the audience responded by embracing that energy. My inner child is still dancing with delight; it appears that we have now transformed the “First-Time Book Reading Jitters” into the Shamanic Jitterbug!
